Ben is a black Labrador cross dog. He was just over 3 years old when he came to LAA in April 1996. Ben is one of our sanctuary dogs and because he has been with LAA a while gives his view on life at LAA.

Here is a picture of Ben with his best friend Jess.

BEN'S COLUMN

From what I've seen of the programme, August will be a very busy month and it is volunteers who make it happen for us.

Family Fun Day on 31st August is the BIG one when there is also a Fun Dog Show that has become a very popular annual event organised by Val and the other kind people at Wigston Magna Dog Club. The show this year will be judged by Rupal, the afternoon presenter for BBC Radio Leicester, who announces our Petfinder bulletins during the week. Family Fun Day is always a fantastic day when you can count on loads of entertainment, refreshments, including a barbeque, and music, both live and disco. It will all be happening, beginning at midday. You can pick up the schedule from Reception or give us a call and we will send one to you.

Off site, so I won't be there of course, is the Wag and Bone Show at Ascot Race Course on 16th August. LAA is having a stall and we (the animals) are represented by Margaret and Tony's Toby, who came from here. If you can make it, you will have a great time for sure but, if not, you should be able to read all about it in the paper. Any event or publicity to help us rescue dogs is always welcome.

Attending and organising these events takes a lot of time from a lot of people and I know that Sue and the Committee would welcome more people to help out. We need volunteers on the stalls and also to help with the preparation for events by putting up and taking down the marquees and so on. If you think you could spare time for this on Family Fun Day, please give Marion a ring on 01455 888546.

We have had the usual flow of cats and dogs coming in this month. Holiday times are always the worst. We even had a tired racing pigeon drop in, so to speak, and so our walks were re-routed in case our more playful instincts got the better of us. Anyway, it all turned out fine as the pigeon recovered and was collected by his owner, who was traced from the ring on the leg of the pigeon.

Don't forget that sponsor packs for the "dog walk" are available now. The Sponsored Walk, on the 14th September, is a good chance to take your dog on a good long walk and to raise funds for us at the same time. I may bow out this year, but I can give the new guys the benefit of my experience in these things,,,,, and will. This year will be special in that, as well as the traditional walk and cup of tea, we will be holding an Autumn Sale and BBQ. So even if you are not walking, make the 14th September a date with LAA.

Finally, I can't say goodbye without mentioning Diane and the warehouse lads from a local animal food manufacturer who came to our rescue recently with a mega donation of animal food when we were running low. So, a big THANK YOU to them.
LAA has a busy summer of fund-raising events planned for more information have a look on their General Information page.

See you in September with more stories from Ben.
